Usually I turn on the iPod and listen to books while knitting on the train. Yesterday I forgot said iPod. It's amazing what you can overhear on public transportation when your ears wander and your eyes stay focused. It almost feels like evesdropping until you realize that either the person is seriously lacking in cell phone etiquette or they want the entire train to hear their conversation. I also wonder if people really think others are just oblivious. As I plugged along on my Green Gable (almost to waist shaping!) I heard a woman invite people she didn't even know to a party for her husband --always amusing to try and figure out who it is you're talking to on the phone because they know your spouse-- and two guys have a conversation like they were close friends, only for me to find out when they departed that they didn't even know each other before that train ride. On the way home I got to observe a couple awkwardly cuddling even though the girl appeared not to want any of that and several people giving me strange glances for knitting on the train. There are always several business conversations taking place in the background, none of which interest me but might interest someone else. Privacy has just gone out the window with the advent of cheap cell phones. There really are many kinds that ride the train. I find that the more I take public transportation, the more I enjoy it. It's so cheap compared to driving, it helps save the environment, and it's a fabulous place to people watch!

Train/El/CTA conversations are always so 'interesting' to overhear - sometimes you wonder how we survived & communicated before we all had cell phones. :)

I wish I lived in a place where public transport was an option. Alas, I do not.
You're coming along swimmingly with your Green Gable (love the color, btw) - it's such a satisfying knit, I can't wait to make another for my mom.
Thanks for putting me on your blogroll!

Oh I miss public transportation. I used to ride the metro in to work everyday and loved to read and people watch. Too bad I wasn't a knitter then--I wish I could knit and commute now.
