« Of Argyles and Roots | HomePage | Socks? »
Yesterday I had a stupid day and today I must rip out about 15 rows of Rusted Root. Crappy but a small sacrifice for a well fitting knit. Since that occured I have no photos to share of any progress what-so-ever. Stink!
I do have a question though. I have never knit a pair of socks and while at first I was hesitent (I would hate to ruin a lovely pair of socks with stinky feet) I have decided I need to jump on the bandwagon. What would be a good pair to do as my first pair ever?
And since I can't knit at work, I've been finding some more web humor in my 'spare' time:
How about about a little Cowboy insight? (check out the rest of this site too, so funny!
Ever wonder what your phone number spells? Mine doesn't spell anything clever. But anus appears in it. Weird.

The easiest sock is probably your basic top-down, k2 p2 ribbing into stockinette with heel flap and gusset. A fun and easy sock has those same features, except substitute a textured rib or mock cable for the stockinette leg.
Google fu should turn up plenty of free basic patterns, unless you want to get a great book like "Sensational Knitted Socks" to explain construction and give you leg pattern ideas. Highly recommend it!

Yea for socks! Do it!
Karen is right, there are so many easy free patterns, but a book like "Sensational Knitted Socks" or one of Nancy Bush's books (Knitting Vintage Socks, and Knitting On the Road) are probably the best for any sock knitter - they have tons of patterns, and many ways to customize the sock specifically for your foot.
This means you can be a part of Socktoberfest this year! :)

I vote for a simply stockinette or ribbed sock, maybe using the Universal Sock Pattern - and I find heel flaps easier than short rows, but it really just depends whether you like picking up stitches or short rowing better.

Knit the socks...knit them!! They are so fun. You just have to go with the instructions and you end up with a perfectly shaped sock, it's amazing.
This pattern is a pretty good basic one http://www.chicknits.com/socklove.html
If you want a more personalized fit, measure around the part of your foot where it meets the leg, convert to the gauge of your yarn, take off 10% and cast on that amount. Then, adjust the other amounts using the percentages in the pattern. it might sound a little complicated but it will end with a perfect fit every time.

I agree with Karen on the basic top down sock. I have knit so many socks lately and that tends to be all I do - basic basic basic. I've got to jazz it up a bit. Congrats on your first socks!

I thought it helped to knit a baby sock or baby bootie first. That way you get the basic construction down and if you mess up it is no big deal. Good luck with your first sock!

I usually stick to the basics for me, top down with a little ribbing. Although I love all Nancy Bush sock books if I ever want to get a little fancy. Good luck!
