Has anyone else ever heard of the cicadas that plague the midwest from about May to June every 17 years? And no, I am not making this up. I know it sounds like a Biblical plaque or something equally preposterous. I'm not originally from the midwest and when my husband told me about the cicadas, I absolutely did not believe him. However, it is so bizarrely true. Cicadas kind of look like mini-cockroaches, have wings, chirp, fall out of trees into your hair, and cover the ground so much that it's almost hard to walk without stepping on them. Crunch. But don't worry, you don't have to let all those cicadas go to waste. You can make cicada cookies, cicada quiche, cake, or wontons, or really anything you can imagine or willingly ingest. Last time this happened, my MIL thought it would be a good idea to make cicada brownies, but didn't squish them first so they tried escaping from the brownie mix in the oven and went splat as soon as they hit the heat. Crunch.
So other than cicada watching, I'm been working, working, working on my wheat-ear! I'm stoked with how fast it's going. It does look a little like a mini-person sweater in the photo, but the edges are all curly and we know how much ribbing scrunches in. Can't wait for it to be finished! Not that I can wear it any time soon but I will be anticipating some nice, crisp, fall weather!

Yeah. They're real. And ewww on eating anything with live bugs inside!
Lickety-split on the sweater, Sarah. It'll be the perfect thing to stave off the fall chill.

The cicadas (or whatever their enormous European cousins are called) we encountered in Croatia were so. loud. They kept us up all night! I cracked up when I read about your mil making cicada brownies. I automatically assumed that she would have put already-dead ones in the batter. To imagine them jumping out of the pan... hilarious!
Your sweater looks fabulous and I can't wait to see more. I love the natural color you chose! Are you going to knit it just as written? I've been wondering about the neckline, it seems almost off the shoulder and would show my gigantic bra straps for sure. :)

Those same cicadas - the 17 year ones - came out on the East Coast about four summers ago. CRAZY. It made the news everyday, and I even heard about the recipes too. They are quite loud, but fascinating as well....
Great progress on your pullover! It is lovely!

I'm so glad to see you're making that sweate. I looks so pretty, but I'm always skeptical until I've seen it knitted up by a "real person." =) Enjoy your long weekend - an extra day with the cicadas, yippee!

I lived in Athens, GA. the last time those cicadas hit town and they were unbelievably loud!

We get Cicada's in Atlanta too. They are SO loud! It's crazy. I had no idea that people ate them!

The wheat-ear is looking lovely!! Can't believe how quickly you've come along on it! And yes, i knew about the cicadas. My sister got married in Chicago last weekend, and as maid-of-honor, i was put on Bug Duty in case any cicadas attacked the bride. Fortunately, we didn't come across any! I hate bugs!

It's not just the midwest that gets cicadas. I remember when I was about 10 years old in Maryland and the cicadas came. They were everywhere!
Anyway, I'm totally inspired to make the wheat ear sweater too! It's so gorgeous and yours is turning out lovely!
